November 2, 2001 Florida-based AuthenTec, biometric semiconductor technology company, is entering the mobile fingerprint-identification market with a sensor that it claims is "by far the smallest touch-and-go biometric device available today."
Measuring 6.5mm x 6.5mm square, the sensor the EntrePad AES3500 is based on AuthenTec's TruePrint technology, which allows fingerprints to be read below the surface of the skin. Surface contaminates, such as dirt and moisture, can render inaccurate readings.
Designed for laptops, cell phones, PDAs, handheld devices and other mobile electronics, the EntrePad is currently compatible with Microsoft Windows (98, ME, NT v4.0, 2000 and XP) and Symbian. Upcoming versions will be marketed for Palms and Windows CE.
AuthenTec will demonstrate its product at the November 12-16 Comdex show in Las Vegas.
