August 31, 2001 An Oregon company has received a patent for technology that embeds digital watermarking in wireless communications.
Digimarc's partent covers technology and methods for embedding and
decoding digital watermarks, which will allow audio content to be tagged for both security and content-delivery purposes.
"The issuance of this patent for cellular telephone applications marks another step in Digimarc's goal to become a standard feature of all media content,'' said Reed Stager, vice president and general manager of Digimarc's MediaCommerce business.
Digimarc says its watermarking could be used to combat fraudulent use of wireless voice communications, authenticating the identity of cell phones and
transmission stations, and securing the delivery of music and other audio content overwireless devices.
Digimarc Corp. is based in Tualatin, Ore. Its products include Digimarc ImageBridge, which allows communicating copyrights in digital images and tracking those images on the Internet.
