August 29, 2001 Intersil, a developer of silicon technology for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN), has teamed with Quanta Computer to help develop wirelessly enabled notebook computers, PDAs and
other small handheld computing devices.
Quanta is Taiwan's largest manufacturer of notebook computers.
In the agreement, announced Monday, Quanta announced that it had selected Intersil as its "premier WLAN solution supplier" and that it will incorporate
Intersil's PRISM 2.5 WLAN chip set in its next generation notebook
computers.
The PRISM 2.5 wireless networking chip set is optimized
for smaller WLAN applications, such as mini-PCI cards and single-sided PCMCIA cards. That reduction in board size, according to Intersil, "opens the door for Quanta to incorporate dual-mode networking capabilities," including Bluetooth, in upcoming products.
Intersil is headquartered in Irvine, Calif.
