May 9, 2001 Microsoft is extending the reach of its .Net strategy through the release of a new mobile server to its manufacturing partners and an announcement that it will launch the newest version of its Windows computer operating system later this year.
Microsoft Mobile Information 2001 Server, released yesterday, is a mobile applications server that includes Outlook Mobile Access, which allows mobile users to access their Microsoft Exchange Server e-mail, contacts, calendar and tasks.
"Mobile Information Server is a key part of Microsoft's overall mobility and .NET strategy and provides carriers, enterprise customers and industry partners with a secure platform for building integrated mobile data solutions today," said Juha Christensen, vice president of the Mobility Group at Microsoft.
Microsoft also announced that it will release its new Windows XP operating system, based on the same technology that underpins Windows 2000, on October 25th. Microsoft, the world's No. 1 software company, said it plans to back the product with a huge marketing campaign aimed at consumers and small businesses.
Mobile Information Server Enterprise Edition and Microsoft Outlook Mobile Access are available through standard retail and volume licensing channels. Also currently available in beta form is Outlook Mobile Manager, a desktop PC application that expands the functionality of Outlook Mobile Access.
