March 20, 2001 – Office Depot is seeking to enhance customer service with a wireless mobile computing delivery tracking system.

Called the Office Depot Signature Tracking and Reporting System, the solution encompasses products from Aether Systems and Symbol Technologies. Office Depot is using the system to streamline management and tracking of its 2000 delivery trucks, according to Dennis Andruskiewicz, the company's senior vice president of distribution.

"Fanatical customer service is our number one priority," said Andruskiewicz. "The implementation of this real-time delivery and tracking system allows us to provide and ensure that our customers get the products they want, when they want them and our drivers can resolve any customer issue more efficiently and accurately."

Office Depot's system, utilizing Symbol's Mobile Gateway on-board data transaction solution, enables drivers to use SPT 1700 Palm O/S handhelds to verify what items are on each truck, capture the customer's signature to complete the transaction and reconcile inventory.

Powered by Aether's wireless software and applications, Office Depot is leveraging the system in several major metropolitan markets, including Atlanta, Baltimore, Dallas and Houston. Plans call for it to be rolled out nationally by year's end, said Andruskiewicz.
