Pogo: Hopping Outside the 3G Box

10Meters News Service

January 18, 2002 – Pogo Technologies, a U.K.-based company, is betting that its compact wireless device will fill a big gap. The gap? The emergence of 3G technologies. Pogo's solution: an all-in-one hybrid product optimized for GSM.

The Pogo, now available in the U.K., will be considered for a U.S. debut, the company said in a release.

The device is a combo PDA/mobile phone that offers unrestricted Internet access with email, SMS, diary, networked address book, MP3 player and phone capabilities.

Utilizing the company's proprietary compression technology, the Pogo allows wireless Internet browsing "at an effective bandwidth of 56Kbps," the company said.

Also signing on with Pogo: Valence Technology of Austin, Texas, developer of Lithium-ion polymer rechargeable batteries.

"The Pogo's excellent run time, fast recharge time and sleek design were made possible largely by Valence's ability to deliver a unique energy solution," said Sean Fernback, head of engineering at Pogo.

The Pogo device is available for purchase in the U.K. through Carphone Warehouse at www.carphonewarehouse.com.
