Wi-Fi Access Gets Another Boost

10Meters News Service

April 5, 2002 – The fast-growing Wi-Fi market got another boost yesterday as wireless access provider Wayport Inc. and GRIC Communications, a remote network alliance, joined forces to untether the mobile workforce.

Announced yesterday, the deal provides GRIC's customers with access to Wayport's Wi-Fi services installed in major hotels and four airports, including Dallas/Fort Worth International, Seattle-Tacoma International, San Jose International and Austin-Bergstrom International.

Wayport's client hotels include Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts, Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, Sonesta Hotels & Resorts and LodgeWorks, as well as MeriStar Hotels & Resorts, which manages hotels under the Hilton, Sheraton, Marriott, Westin, Radisson and Doubletree brands.

GRIC Communications, based in Milpitas, Calif., is a provider of Internet-based mobile office communications services for ISPs, communications providers and enterprise customers. Its GRIC Alliance Network provides customers with remote access capabilities in more than 150 countries.

"With the addition of Wayport's expansive U.S. network, GRIC is able to offer an unparalleled global solution for the roaming user," said Bharat Dave, president and COO of GRIC Communications.

Founded in 1996, Wayport, based in Austin, Texas, provides wireless and wired high-speed Internet access for the hospitality industry. Its airport services include the Laptop Lane business centers, which feature private offices equipped with wired high-speed Internet connectivity.
